Kara Ries


Kara is a registered United States patent attorney and licensed to practice law in Minnesota and Washington, DC to practice law.

Kara has a background in biomedical electrical engineering and has extensive experience counseling clients on many aspects of intellectual property law, including procuring, utilizing, enforcing and defending patents and trademarks. Kara has worked on patents in the areas of medical devices, smartphones, computerized medical data, biotechnology and mechanical devices in the aviation and automotive industries. Kara also has extensive experience in negotiating and enforcing licensing and supply contracts for developing and commercializing corporate products.

Kara began her career in patent litigation and patent licensing in the medical device and biotech fields for a large law firm. In addition to counseling clients at a firm, she worked as inhouse counsel in Munich, Germany, gaining international patent experience helping her company strengthen their patent and trademark portfolio and negotiate key technology development agreements. Working internationally provides Kara with a unique ability to help corporate clients operate and protect their intellectual property beyond the client’s domestic boarders.

In addition to helping corporations with large patent portfolios, Kara has helped start-up medical device inventors and businesses with their patents and trademarks. Her experience working in many aspects of intellectual property, from a start-up to a long established multi-national company with an extensive patent and trademark portfolio, allows her to counsel and guide her clients in protecting intellectual property assets and continued counseling on strategic corporate asset decision making.
